The Kitchen Sink Artists!

Let’s open the bathroom door!
Over the last couple of weeks the Kitchen Sink Artists have shown us how to explore our life at home in new and extraordinary ways! We have explored our favourite places, the kitchen pantry and even the bathroom!
We examined the work of John Bratby who has created some wonderful paintings of the everyday, ordinary scenes in his home, including the toilet and the running water in his sink. He captured the toilet and sink in a way that makes the viewer look more closely at them and has helped us to see these everyday things in a new way, with fresh eyes.

How often have you looked closely at your toilet at home? Have you been mesmerised by water filling in the sink? Have you watched the bubbles form when the water is running very fast? Below are some wonderful responses from the students:

These are Evie’s continuous line drawings of her bathroom.

This is Owen’s thoughtfully observed drawing of his toilet.

Huon has created an amazing bird’s eye view of his bathroom with one continuous line.

Here is Javiera’s amazing drawing!

Yvette has taken a line for a walk and created an amazing continuous line drawing.

Let’s open the cutlery drawer!
Last week we zoomed into the drawers at home and explored how the things we use every day can be re used in new ways to create interesting art works and installations.
We were inventive with cutlery and utensils like spoons and forks because as artists we have the potential to see things in new ways. Does a spoon ever remind you of something else? What about a wooden spoon or a combination of wooden spoons? What about a combination of spoons and forks? Or cookie cutters? What shapes do they remind you of?
We constructed trees and forests from our utensils and then used these constructions to inspire us to draw or paint them in new and interesting ways.
Here are some of the incredible responses that students have created!

This is Owen’s wonderful interpretation.

This is Lola’s life force tree!

This is Rohan from prep! What an amazing tree!
