Welcome to Week 8

Welcome to week 8. Term 1 has absolutely flown by and here we are, with Easter almost upon us. There is so much going on in the 5/6 Neighbourhood. Here are some of the highlights:

Inquiry

Last week saw our Bottle Biology provocation come to the end of its life cycle, although many of the kids’ creations live on.

In the last couple of weeks, our investigation into “why create” has found us wondering why people invent. We have also been looking at some of the major issues facing humanity, issues that will surely require us to come up with creative solutions. While considering the huge issues facing humanity, we have also realised that to succeed on the macro level, we need to succeed on the micro level. For example, if we can’t keep our Neighbourhood tidy and take care of our resources, how can we hope to tackle waste on a global scale?! This week, we will be looking at this idea of macro vs micro in detail.

5/6 Neighbourhood Clubs

A very welcome addition to the 5/6 Neighbourhood this year are our afternoon clubs that meet once or twice each week after recess. Students have chosen between running, drawing, reading and coding clubs. The clubs give students the opportunity to follow their passions with like-minded peers.

Maths

In maths at the moment, it’s all about fractions on the one hand, and data interpretation on the other. We are investigating how data is used to persuade an audience and how important it is to be “data literate”.

English

We have rolled out Reading Logs Online for all students. Please encourage your kids to record what they are reading in their reading logs. Students are also beginning to keep personal spelling lists at the back of their English books. In writing, students are preparing information texts and persuasive texts connected to our Inquiry.

Please ask to look at what your kids are working on. The creativity, diversity and depth we are seeing is typical of the strong and capable children at PHPS.
