Maths Update: Addition strategies – Counting on

WEEK 1

During the first numeracy workshop of term 3, we investigated addition strategies, focusing on the strategy of counting on. We discussed how there are many different strategies for counting. Counting all takes the most time, not very efficient and we are more likely to get the wrong answer. Counting on makes it faster – depending on which number you count on from. Identifying the larger number then counting up in the correct sequence, using fingers for support is the method we were focused on.

The Preps learnt a new dice game. 2 dice are rolled and then the child adds the two numbers together – trying to use the most efficient and accurate strategy for them. The children could choose from a variety of dices. Dice with dots, numerals to 6 and numerals to 9.

When students demonstrated competency of the counting on skill, they were challenged to roll 3 dice.

(e.g. Roll 5, 9, 3 10, 11, 12 then 13, 14, 15, 16, 17

There are some common errors with this addition strategy

MISUNDERSTANDING 1: Counting on and forgetting to stop at the correct number.

STRATEGY TO SUPPORT ACCURACY – Using fingers when counting will support with this)

MISUNDERSTANDING 2: Including one of the numbers in the count (Example of this error: 6 and 4 – 6, 7, 8, 9)

STRATEGY TO SUPPORT ACCURACY – They must count on – the number after begins the counting on sequence.

This is a great game to practice at home. All you need is some dice!

WEEK 2

Students used 2 dice and wrote the number sentence into their books. e.g.: 6 and 4 is 10.
