Dear Parents,
A word list has been sent home today.
As beginner readers, the Preps are encouraged to build their word recognition of commonly used words. The word list outlines the 12 most common words that children will encounter when reading.
It is important that the children learn these words in a meaningful context, as this supports the recognition and retention of these words. The children are continuously exposed to these key words during school, in meaning full contexts. For example: The bell rings at the end of lunch.
Ideas for home learning:
– Focus on one or two particular words from this list if it is repeated in a story from a book you are reading with your child.
– Discuss the pattern in the text. “I can jump. I can swing. I can slide.”
– Make a meaningful sentence and write it down for them to regularly practice reading. (eg – I can draw.) Stick the sentence somewhere prominent for them to practice; encouraging them to point to each word as they read it.
– When they can recognise a word consistently in texts automatically, the word can be coloured in on the sheet to celebrate their achievement.
