Italia in isolamento: musica e comunita`

La musica fa respirare-music makes you breathe” (Alda Merini)

This week we have been looking at the importance of musica, comunita`, famiglia and being insieme (together). We’ve explored how the Italian people used music as a tremendous source of support and reassurance during their first period of isolamento. From their balconies Italians sang, played instruments, engaged in pots and pans percussion…! These ‘flashmob’ concerti united Italians in a time of disconnection and isolation. We have looked at the importance of musica, comunita`e famiglia in our own lives, what they mean to us, and how they helped us to find solace and strength during lockdown. Here are some thoughts shared by students:

Musica: “It represents…a lot of people like dancing…and you mostly need music to dance, but you can dance to silence if that’s better for you…it makes them happy. People might have wanted to go somewhere but they couldn’t because of lockdown so music helped them.” (Ivy Belle)

“It’s like the notes are coming to life.” (Finn)

“Insieme”...I reckon it’s going to help them get through lockdown because people are going to be supportive and help one another.” (Jack B)

“I think that famiglia, for people in Italy, if they’re worried about things, they can talk to them, like they won’t be so worried and all the people in their ‘comunita`’ are helping them.” (Owen)

Comunita`…means everybody in the world and in lots of places where there is coronavirus.” (Amelie)
