Hello and welcome to Term 4!
In Term 3, the student’s explored the wonders of our natural environment – focusing on the desert, the ocean and the rainforest. This term we are provoking the children’s thinking by presenting a different story about the environment. We’ve been looking at a range of issues that can have positive and negative impacts on the environment. In our discussions with the children, one child asked “who is responsible for all the plastic in the ocean?” This prompted a very lively discussions about the rubbish at our school and the impact that this has on our environment. This has resonated with the children and they have been keen to look at their own rubbish output. Many students have been going home and have been instigators of change in their own homes.
Another lively discussion was had around the issue of palm oil. A student asked “why do people need so much palm oil?”. This prompted an investigation into what palm oil is used for. The students discovered that palm oil is used in a wide range of household products. Many children have come to school to report a list of products they have discovered at home that contain palm oil.
We plan to continue to our investigation.
