Hi everyone!
Welcome back to our final term for Year 1! We hope you all had an enjoyable break and are raring to go for yet another big term – 11 weeks to be exact! Just to name a few events for this term, we have our swimming program, the Life Ed van, our junior school athletics day as well as our open neighbourhood learning celebration where we showcase what we’ve been working on throughout the term.
As we begin our learning for Term 4 and continue our inquiry journey of stories and storytelling, this week the students have had opportunities to reflect on their holidays through writing, art and storytelling. By having a strong focus on capital letters, full stops, colourful words and creative introductions, students were required to write a recap of the number of experiences they had during their break.
Following on from their writing, students were also required to illustrate a picture using a variety of different artistic tools. These included pencils, crayons, oil pastels, tissue paper, textas and water colouring. The picture gave the viewer a clear picture of an experience that each student did during the holidays.
They have also continued to investigate money and what specific coins and notes you need to pay for a certain amount. By looking at a variety of catalogues, students chose at least two items and wrote down their details. They were to write the name of the item, how much the item costs, a small picture and most importantly, the appropriate amount of coins and/or notes that were required.
From an inquiry perspective, students have continued to look deeper at our planet’s environment. Specifically focusing on the ocean and rainforest, they had the opportunity to look at how each of these environments were devastated by human kind – the amount of plastic in the ocean killing our marine life and the continuous cutting down of precious rainforest trees; destroying the countless amount of animal homes. Here, students completed an ‘I see, I think, I wonder’ where they were able to identify and voice their own opinion on the topic. It also gave them the opportunity to question and wonder how these devastations are happening. And, from these questions being asked by the students, we will continue to investigate and find answers during next week’s workshops.
