Educating Our Readers

After a number of Workshops and Target sessions based on unpacking various elements of our identity, we created a research question based on our personal interests. We are currently in the process of researching our own topics and taking SHARP Notes (Short, Accurate, Relevant, Paraphrased) to enable us to begin writing information reports.

While it has been relatively easy for us to come up with interesting questions we are curious about, it is more challenging to direct our research. Finding up-to-date books or websites that are student-friendly, finding relevant podcasts or documentaries; or connecting with experts while at school posed greater difficulties. The 5/6s will be encouraged to write out any questions and post them in our Neighbourhood. It is hoped that other students will see a question they suspect can be answered by a family member or family friend. In the event your child brings home a research question belonging to another student, we hope you will take a moment to write a considered response to assist in our research. It may be helpful to take a family trip to your local library to stock up on any books or materials related to your child’s research questions or to view documentary films together and discuss your observations.

We are trying to form beneficial research habits by using a template that requires us to record the resources used, write the information found; and then make connections or ask questions to help make sense of it all. If you are curious about the research so far, you can view the template/notes on Google Classroom with your child.
