Learning Focus – Week 7!

This week, the students continued where they left off from last week’s valuable discussion of what messages or lessons stories hold. After coming up with four categories to place these messages/lessons into: Environmental, Feelings and Emotions (Wellbeing), Good & Evil, Cultures, students wrote down a list of messages they would like to teach/send to the rest of the world. Of course, there were many different responses, but most came under the following:

  • Teaching the younger generations how to care for our environment in multiple ways.
  • Providing advice on how we, as a world, can improve to be friendly to one another as well as ourselves.
  • Caring for our own bodies – eating healthily and keeping fit.
  • Creating learning games that can teach not just younger people at school, but older people who don’t have experience with technology (phones, computers etc.)

After our reflections, teachers came up with a series of questions which will be our next focus within stories. They include:

  • What is our understanding of stories today and the place of stories in the world?
  • How are stories used to build communities and communicate important knowledge?
  • What do you think was the important knowledge/message/lesson in the story ‘Lester and Clyde?’

Dancing in the Barber shop:

Our first Tarantella workshop with Rosa was a fantastic experience. She taught us all about a traditional Italian dance which incorporated careful stepping, turning and partnering up. Most of the students found it fascinating how the dance was compared to a spider – a tarantula spider. For those who have not yet paid for this wonderful tri-workshop, please do so as soon as possible! Pictures of this first workshop are found below.

Our maths focus is now on measurement and geometry! In particular, 2D and 3D shapes! At the beginning of the week, the students went on a neighbourhood shape hunt where they explored all the of the different 2D shapes they could find. They will also be looking to identify each shapes characteristics and where they can find these in the real world, as well as why they’re important.

Our projects groups are finalizing their individual stories. Students have been busy writing their own story that is based around their project focus – animations, puppetry or narrative creations. Many have edited their stories and are up to publishing. The students are very keen to showcase each of their story creations to you on the upcoming student led conference as the main learning focus in line with our inquiry.

Reminders:

  • Reading Journals/Folders for tomorrow’s library opportunities!
  • Student Led conference times will be available early next week! Keep an eye on compass for notifications.
  • Next Monday is Queens B’day (No school)
  • Tarantella payments need to be paid as soon as possible!
