As we finish up another week, here is a snapshot of some of the learning that we did in the Year 2 Neighbourhood! Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered over the past few weeks to help students with their Timeline Project research.
Maths
Using the mathematical terms edge, vertex and face the students described and compared the properties of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. Students were introduced to arrays as a way of solving multiplication problems – we will continue this investigation next week. Students started to investigate mapping. Students used directional language to describe how to get from the Australian Native Gardens on Gatehouse Street in Parkville to the wetlands on Manningham Street.
Guided Reading
Students participate in small group discussions on a weekly basis using a shared text that is chosen to support their reading development. This week the groups were focused on determining the main idea from informational texts and then summarising what they had read.
Writing
Students were introduced to persuasive texts, focussing on the structure of the text and how to create compelling arguments to support their claim. Students also had the opportunity to develop their narrative writing skills by creating a story on their own or with a buddy. This week’s spelling focussed in on long and short vowel sounds (such as long a, short o etc), high frequency words and suffixes. Deb has asked if the Year 2 students can prepare some questions for Kwame and Kofi, to ask during the performances next week during the transition times between drumming and dancing. Students brainstormed and wrote down their questions during Projects and Provocations.
Inquiry
Students used the research that they had done so far to begin to create a timeline to show the important changes that have occurred related to their chosen topic. They began by chronologically ordering their key dates a timeline, and included drawings and sentences of text that allowed them to share their knowledge and understandings. Students will continue to work on these draft timelines next week so that we can display them in the neighbourhood. In a workshop the students were supported to add greater detail to their existing research projects.
