This week, students are continuing to discuss some understanding of the different functions of a group but will focus on supporting their learning with documentation. We will also focus on making connections between the current questions about the groups characteristics and what we are researching through their animal posters. This will especially be done through the link from scientific groups to meeting places, groups and their norms.
Walkathon!
Earlier today, Princes Hill PS all participated in their annual school Walkathon. Students were asked to walk/power-walk around the school’s boundaries as many times as they can. During the walk, teachers tallied each child’s laps and finished the event with a home group picnic with gelatos!
We now ask students to collect their sponsorship money and return it back to their home groups so they can be in the running for a pizza afternoon! For now, check out these great shots from today:
City Excursion Planning continued!
The students are looking deeper into what particular meeting places we could possibly visit throughout Melbourne and our city excursion creation. This week, the students will not only continue creating a route that visits a number of meeting places, but write out a budget of how much the excursion may possibly cost and finally draw up a rough schedule of which meeting place to visit first/second/third.
Meeting Place Measuring and Converting!
In order to begin the process of creating their meeting place models, students will be required to show CLEAR evidence of their planning within their maths books. These plans will replicate what has been shown from our recent visitations of Viv the architect and two more throughout this week. All in all, the plans will also have to include the following within their maths books:
- The name of their chosen place and a brief description.
- What type of model are they planning for: 3D printer, wooden model, clay creation.
- The 2D and 3D shapes their model will have involved.
- Measurements that include conversions of mm, cm and m.
- RULED up lines within the maths book lines.
- Labels describing the spaces of their meeting place.
Analysing groups as an Anthropologist!
This engaging provocation is a chance for students to listen carefully to videos of David Attenborough’s voice, then in turn choose a video of their own choice where they can record their own voice over the top – narrating what the video describing. It is also a chance for students to develop their writing skills when taking notes from videos, identify their own narrative scripts from a chosen video and finally record/experiment with their voices to share with the rest of the neighbourhood.
Information Reports – re: Science Poster!
In connection to their animal science posters, students will be required to write an information report that supports the illustrations and diagrams of their chosen animal poster. Topics written will cover animals facts that include communication, habitat and other features. It will also be a great opportunity for students to understand the organisation of an information report, the devices they will be required to write with and use annotated samples as a guide.
Thank you to those parents who came and helped with the Walkathon today. It was a great success, now we are really encouraging students to bring back their sponsorship money/forms!
