Today the Grade 2, 3 & 4 students had a wonderful visit from a national hero in winter olympian
David Morris!
The school not only realised that he lived in Melbourne but when researching on the athlete realised he closely lived by the strong values of persistence, humility and learning to be humble in losing situations.
After accepting his invitation to our school, we firstly began by researching who David was, where he trained, how he became an olympian and find out any interesting information from his websites. The students not only researched information on David as a professional athlete, but found his personal everyday values resemble closely with our school values: One Community, Strong and Capable Children and Expanding Possibilities.
We also gave the students the opportunity to compose a series of questions based around David and his experiences with the winter olympics.
Once David arrived in our gym, the students immediately took notice of his beginning slide – a picture of him in his olympics uniform, his name and the bold words ‘Persistence’ ‘Humility’ ‘Humble.’ He gave his 45-minute speech which included his upbringing, how he found aerial skiing, world championships, injuries and low points and of course that controversial jump in the recent winter olympics – to which hi opponent was chosen over him.
The students were not only fascinated with his stories, but found his videos inspiring – particularly when he landed his skis and winning silver in the 2014 winter olympics! From here, students had the chance to ask questions, hold his silver medal and thank him for his visit to our school.
