Learning Focus – Week 4

Week 4 will see another big burst of learning, where students will continue to investigate and go deeper with their understandings about our big idea of “Back to the Future!”.

Our inquiry will take us down the avenue of past/present/future, timelines and the concept of change. We will look at what major events have happened in our lives that have enabled change, we will create timelines that show different chunks of time and we will document our understandings of the concepts of past/present and future.

English

We will be continuing to develop our understanding of recount writing, in particular adding to our text by using adjectives to make it more interesting. Students will be encouraged to write as much as possible during project and provocation time, where they will be given opportunities to check over their work for spelling errors and also re-reading their work to see if it makes sense.  We will start our weekly “Spelling Investigations” on Monday, where we focus on a particular letter pattern each week.  This week we will use the text “Edward the Emu” to gain understanding of the “Short e” sound.  Students will be encouraged to become “Word Watchers” and look for the short e in texts they read during the week.

Maths

We will start our look at timelines this week – using different examples of timelines and how they are constructed.  This not only develops the students’ understanding of “measurement and time”, but it also allows for students to put their place value skills into good use. Students will also attend targets and workshops that will focus on renaming numbers and skip counting. We also have Year 5/6 students joining us throughout the week to provide support to the students with some new maths games we are introducing.
