A Snapshot of our Learning

The students are beginning to settle in well into the year 2 neighbourhood and are relishing the time they have to participate in Project and Provocations.  Today in our reflection time, we showed the students photos we took of them whilst they were working and asked them to explain to us what the learning was and how it was related to ideas and investigations in the neighbourhood.  The students in the photos were given opportunities to share their learning and other students were encouraged to add on to the discussion.

This is Fox and Rudi playing a game they created using their common maths goal “making, reading, writing and ordering whole numbers to and from 10,000”.  The boys helped create a board game that allowed them to demonstrate their understanding and also consolidate their ability to use high numbers confidently.  Other students also began to make board games yesterday to help them work on their individual maths goals and have enjoyed sharing them with others in the neighbourhood.

Matilda and Monet are using our wellbeing provocations of “One Community” and “Friendship” to design a Wordsearch.  They were discussing with each other what words they should include in the Wordsearch and using the available resources to help with their spelling. The girls were thinking deeply about what qualities you need to be a good friend and how we can all make a valid contribution to the neighbourhood.

Alexandra, Jeannie and Maia are using the real life provocation of the Olympics to help them investigate both geography and maths.  They were asked to research what countries are competing in the Winter Olympics, using the official Winter Olympics website and then were taking these countries and then finding out how far the athletes would have to travel to get to Seoul, South Korea.  They used the Time and Date website and input the country of origin and then South Korea as their destination.  The girls are having to use larger numbers, into the thousands, to read the distances between the two countries.  We may take their learning further tomorrow and work out which country has had to travel the furthest to get to the olympics!

Cleo, Marni and Matilda were also using the Olympics to drive their learning.  The girls were reading data tables on the Olympic website to find out what the medal tally for the day is.  They were finding out which country was leading the ranks and helping fill in the table.  They also came across some interesting pieces of information – in regards to the naming of countries for the Olympics – Republic of Korea, as both North and South were competing together and OAR, standing for Olympic Athletes of Russia.  Tomorrow another group may like to complete the rankings of total medals won.

Nyla, Maia and Ben were taking the opportunity for some quiet reading time and sharing books with each other.  The students commented that by sharing the book together they were able to help each other out with reading strategies and encourage each other to share their reflections on the books they have read.

Saphira and Ela are shown here collaborating on a story.  Sometimes two heads are better than one when it comes to thinking of great ideas!  The girls were using the word resources around them to support their spelling. Tomorrow they will be able to conference with a teacher, to see what they can add to their writing to take it to the next level.

Finally, Aurelie and Aliyea are shown here working out their body measurements for our Metric Me investigation.  The girls commented that accuracy is a crucial part in measuring – making sure you put the tape measure in the exact spot, so you can get an accurate measurement.

The students will continue to make reflections on their learning throughout the coming weeks and be able to share with the neighbourhood how they can take their learning deeper.
