Today the prep students took part in a mathematics workshop where we investigated how tall we could build using just 20 kapla blocks. First we needed to make sure that we had exactly twenty, as you could not qualify for the challenge if you had too many or too few. The students experimented with many ways of stacking and constructing, always improving their structures to see whether they could make taller towers. Some students decided to collaborate with each other while others preferred to do it alone. It was wonderful to watch the students challenge themselves and apply their thinking.
The workshop also allowed us to make some initial assessments on students’ understanding of counting including one-to-one correspondence, knowledge of number sequence up to 20 as well as the ability to trust the count.
Here are some photos of students with their towers.
