“Create a Country” Project

Last Friday, the year 2 neighbourhood was introduced to their new project for the term!  This term the students have the challenge to create their own country.  The students will work collaboratively in small groups to plan, design and create their country.  They will use their gained knowledge about features and cultures of different countries to help them with their projects.

The students were given a list of things they MUST  include in their country creation:

  • Name
  • Flag
  • Geography/Maps
  • Landmarks
  • National food
  • Currency
  • Language

They were then given another list, of which they must include AT LEAST 3 in their projects:

  • National Anthem
  • Traditional Dance
  • Traditional Clothes
  • Climate
  • Activities/Sports
  • Emblem
  • Animals
  • Plants

Students are encouraged to also think of more things they would like to include and discuss it with their teachers.

Students will work with their group to create a presentation.  They were given a list of ways they could present their projects:

  • Poster
  • Models/Dioramas
  • Promotional Videos
  • Performance
  • Music
  • Make clothing
  • Virtual Worlds

The one way they are NOT allowed to present is doing a powerpoint presentation! They may choose to do a variety of these – students are only limited by their imaginations!

To work out the groups, students were asked to write down the names of 3 people they were happy to work with, and then Jen, Meredith and Shirley spent Friday afternoon making sure students had at least 1 person of their choice in their group! The students were put into groups of 4-5 and organised into a large project group that will be facilitated by a teacher.  The students will be asked to check in with their ‘project manager’, to make sure everyone is focussed and on task.  Below is a list of the groups and their facilitator.
