Inquiry: Our Systems, Our World, Ourselves
New big ideas:
- Organisation and classification helps us understand the world
- Our understandings influence our decisions
Initial big idea: “A system set of parts working together or interconnected to form a complex whole.”
As a neighbourhood we are continuing to move through the Expand phase of our inquiry. The students have begun the term by enthusiastically engaging with our current big ideas related to decisions and our knowledge of the world. The students have been deepening their understanding of these ideas by asking questions about the world around them, brainstorming their everyday actions to unpack how these are influenced by their scientific knowledge and classifying and describing the world around them by looking at similarities and differences. In group discussion the students have shared what these ideas mean to them and how their responses are an opportunity to learn and share.
In wellbeing sessions the students have thought about their emotional response to different situations and how students in the Prep neighbourhood may experience these. The outcome of these discussions will be a series of short, small but engaging booklets about emotions in our day.
Students have also expanded their understanding of indigenous trailblazers and change makers. These thoughts were shared beautifully by selected members of the neighbourhood at Friday’s assembly. Well done to those students.
Next steps:
Mathematics
Students are continuing to explore mathematics through rich problem solving activities and will be building upon their understanding of fractions to look more closely at place value including decimals.
Writing
As writers we will be researching and drafting information about indigenous Victorian species to create a published information report. Students are focused on adding detail through research, specific word choices and images to convey information.
Spelling foci: Prefixes, including un, re and pre.
