Learning about Narratives

This week the students have started learning about narratives.  The students will read lots of narratives over the term to explore the features of these texts.  This week students have explored how a narrative is structured into three main stages.  We talked about the introduction or orientation stage where the author introduces the characters and sets the scene,  the complication stage where the characters are presented with a problem or an obstacle they have to overcome and the resolution stage where we find out how the problem is resolved.  Over the next couple of weeks we will be reading narratives and discussing techniques authors use to set the scene of the story and how they draw the reader into the story and make the reader want to read on to find out how the characters get out of the situations they find themselves in.  We will also be exploring other aspects of a good story like character development through the use dialogue and descriptive language.  Through the process the students will be given opportunities to write their own narrative and apply what they have learnt.
