Bronwyn, the school’s social worker, has been conducting wellbeing sessions with the children. She started the session with a teamwork game involving straws. The children formed pairs and were required to move around the room while balancing 2 straws between their fingers or hands. The activity was extended when they were asked to form a larger group with another pair. Bronwyn then called the students back to the floor to discuss the task. She asked the children to think about what helped them to do the activity. The children identified ‘communication, cooperation and compromise’ as 3 qualities that helped them with the task.
Bronwyn then asked the children to come up with a definition of the word ‘proud’. She presented the children with a scenario involving a girl coming home and telling her father that she did something proud today. She asked the children to form small groups and brainstorm what she might have done to say this to her father. The children’s ideas varied from ‘standing up for yourself, to helping out a friend, to coming first in a race.
Bronwyn finished the session by asking the children to think about how they are doing things at home or school that make them feel proud. This would be a great opportunity for parents to talk to their children about some of things they should feel proud about. The children will share these with each other in next week’s session.
