Literacy
This week in literacy, we will continue working on our story-books. We will use this opportunity to explore the conventions of writing, in particular, punctuation and spelling. The children have been working on their first drafts in their writing books and are working toward publishing their final drafts in their own booklet, in which they will write their story and do accompanying pictures. In reading, the children have been exploring what makes a good reader and celebrating book week. The children have shared their ideas about their favourite books and the strategies they use to help them with their reading. The five strategies we’ve looked at are: the listening lion (they listen to see if the word makes sense); eagle eyes; (looking for picture clues); stretchy the snake (sounding out); chunky-monkey (looking for smaller words in larger worlds); skippy kangaroo (reading on then jumping back to that word).
Numeracy
This week the children have continued working on a whole-class calendar. This is a fun, engaging way for them to explore measurement. They will be working in groups and designing their own particular month, in which they will include special events they researched last week.
Inquiry
This week the children will continue to explore what “comfortable” means to them. We will ask them the question “what does comfortable mean” and ask them to share their thoughts and ideas, through discussion and through exploring the following provocations: What sounds make you feel calm? What colours make you feel a specific way? What things do you need to make you feel safe and comfortable?
