Well done to all Preps for their wonderful participation in their first writing workshop on Friday. It takes bravery to begin writing and taking that plunge and having a go is vital. They are all on their own journey as writers and it is something that takes time and practice.
Key points we focused on during the workshop
- Writing books are just like story books. They start at the front cover and move one page at a time though the book. The prep writing books tell a story of their learning.
- How to hold a pencil – crocodile grip!
- Where to begin writing on the page – at the top and move from left to right.
The preps were asked how they are feeling about writing. They were given instructions to write their name and then draw a picture of themselves, showing how they are feeling about writing. Children who are still learning how to write their name were supported to trace over letters written by the teacher. Once they received their new books, they went to work. We discovered that there are mixed feelings towards writing – which is certainly to be expected.
A great way to build confidence for writing is by encouraging your child to make an entry in their Reader’s notebook each week . They can have a go at writing the title (if they are feeling unsure – parents can write and preps can trace over the letters.)
We look forward to seeing the preps grow as writers throughout the year!
