Pattern exploration

The Preps have made some key discoveries through our pattern inquiry.

We can see and hear patterns. They are on clothes, in stories, in songs and dances. The children observed patterns in the school environment – inside and outside.

The key concept to understand about pattern is the repetition. A base pattern is made and then repeated over and over.

We can make patterns with:

  • Numbers
  • Materials (eg – shapes, coloured sticks and unifix)
  • Sounds
  • Body movements

We have been enjoying  ‘Highway Number 1’

Movement patterns:

  • Walk walk and run run run / Walk walk and run run run / Walk walk and run run run
  • Heel and toe and stamp / Heel and toe and stamp / Heel and toe and stamp
  • Side together wiggle / Side together wiggle / Side together wiggle
  • Jump jump and clap clap clap / Jump jump and clap clap clap / Jump jump and clap clap clap
