A message from our Premier to all children participating in the Challenge

Congratulations to all the young Victorians who are participating in the 2016 Premiers’ Reading Challenge (the Challenge).

In the Education State, literacy skills are at the heart of ensuring that all Victorian children and young people have the chance to succeed in learning and in life.

For 11 years, the Challenge has inspired children to read widely and discover the hidden joys within the pages of a book. In 2013, the Challenge expanded to include young children from birth to five, in recognition of the strong evidence base that shows reading to young children promotes brain development and language learning.

Books can transport us to other worlds, entertain us, expand our horizons and teach us new and exciting things. With nearly 9,000 books on the Challenge booklist, there is something to appeal to everyone.

On behalf of former Premiers John Cain, Jeff Kennett, Steve Bracks, John Brumby, Ted Baillieu and Denis Napthine, I would like to wish this year’s participants, and supporters, the best of luck on their reading adventures.

Thank you for making the Challenge such an exceptional success!
