The Preps learnt a new song last week – ‘The friends of ten’
The song helps children learn the combinations of numbers that can make ten. It also supports rhyme recognition with its rhyming jingle. eg – 5 and 5, danced the jive! 3 and 7 came with Kevin! 1 and 9 arrived on time!
With each combination, it showed how the combination can be made on a 10s frame.
During the mathematics workshop, the Preps had the opportunity to show their understanding of the concept, through making 10 with 2 different coloured unifix. They could also write the corresponding numeral to match the amount.
During a writing session last week, the Preps revisited the song and wrote ‘Friends of Ten’ and wrote down the combinations of numbers that they know can make ten. It was a good opportunity to practice letter formation for the word ‘and’.
During a writing session on Friday, the Preps revisited the song and wrote the title ‘Friends of Ten’. We discussed how the number 10 is a numeral and 10 can also be represented as a word – ten. They then demonstrated their knowledge of the numbers that can make ten by writing down the numeral combinations, seeking support on the board if they needed it. It was a good opportunity to practice writing the word ‘and’. The preps will continue to practice correct formation of the letter ‘a’ this week during handwriting.
