Some information about the African drumming incursion next term

In Term 2 children will have the opportunity to participate in a series of 7 sessions with Kofi Kunkpe, experiencing traditional drumming, dancing, songs and culture from Ghana and other West African countries.  This experience will commence with a performance by Kofi and other West African artists, and a cultural presentation to help the children contextualise the learning. The 7 week sequence of drumming sessions will conclude with each learning neighbourhood showcasing their learning through a performance.

Who is Kofi?

Kofi Kunkpe is a master drummer from the Volta Region of Ghana. He has performed and taught with a wide variety of Ghanaian and international companies including Asanti Dance Theatre (Ghana / Australia), African Footprints International (Ghana) and Wild Moves International (Australia). He also worked with Anansi Travel NGO (USA) as their djembe instructor between 2004 and 2012. From 2007 to 2010 Kofi was employed as the Performing Arts Group manager of the Freespirit Foundation (Poland) in Moree, Ghana, teaching performing arts to disadvantaged children from the region. Kofi has toured to New York to perform with the Elemina Dance Ensemble (Ghana). He has performed and taught extensively throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria and New South Wales.

Performances: 07, 08 June (Tuesday, Wednesday)
