Yesterday, the Preps took part in their first transition session to prepare for next year. They were split into 2 groups. One group began with shared reading by Tomo in the Year 1 Torus and the other went on a tour of their neighbourhood for 2017. The children swapped halfway through the session so that they could have both experiences.
On the tour, the Preps were not told the space that they went into and they had to observe their surroundings to guess which one they were in.
They quickly identified Art Studio – the clues were all the different art materials, lino floor and diaramas that the Year 2’s had created. The Learning Commons looked a lot like ours – there are tables for writing materials such as grey leads and alphabet strips, word and letter study charts and a reading area. The Performance Space has a projector screen, stage, costumes, Italian learning centre and also materials to use for numeracy workshops and targets.
After they toured their indoor learning spaces, we went outside to see where they would be eating lunch and where they will be lining up. We also looked at where the closest drink taps and toilets are.
The first session was all about getting to know each of the purposeful learning spaces. During their second session tomorrow, they will be getting to know their teachers for next year and participating in provocation time.
