Week 4 Learning Reflection

Dear Parents and Carers,

Rain, and focusing on the ever changing weather has been a feature of this week in the Year 2 Neighbourhood.  We have been referring to the Melbourne Water Website in the mornings where we saw a graph that looked like a hill that showed us how much water had been going into our water catchments over the year (Nina).  We noticed that the time of year that has the least amount of rainfall is March and April (Binderiya) and late winter and early spring have the largest amounts of rainfall (Edie).

In Projects and Provocations we continue to focus on investigating the concept of Welcome (Remy).  We have started to finalise the project groups for the Welcome Expo that will be held on Wednesday 11th March at 6pm (Ivy Belle and Binderiya).  Some of our current project groups are:

  • The Welcome Expo Play
  • The Poster Group (to explain how each space is purposefully used to deepen our learning in our Neighbourhood)
  • The Welcome Lego Film Group
  • The Comic Group

Camilla and Aimi have been practicing skip counting by 5’s, 2’s and 3’s, Iggy has been encouraging everyone to practice their number fluency by engaging in the weekly Place Value Open Ended Question Challenge.  Ivy Belle also wants our audience to know we have also been learning how to rename numbers as a strategy for addition and subtraction and Camilla has been using the HTO game to practice using MAB Blocks.

We have all used mirrors, pencils and fine liners to create our self portraits that are now displayed in the Studio to show who belongs in our neighbourhood.

We have also been looking at ways to improve our wellbeing.  We began the week by thinking of the people in our lives that we feel safe to talk to.  We did this by tracing our hands and writing down the names of five people (Thomas). We also had a group discussion about safety at school. We wrote down ways and drew ways to be safe at school and contrasted them with ways that are not safe (Vivienne).

We continue to work on improving our independent reading every afternoon with books that we have bought from home or borrowed from the library (Thomas).

Stay tuned for more amazing updates!
