Line, Colour, Shape and the art of Keith Haring…

Weeks 3 and 4

“First lines are a gift. We don’t always know what is coming next, where the journey of the line will lead us.” Tate Modern

This week (week 3) we focussed on observational drawings of nature. We observed the plant specimens in vases and took a line for a walk in the spirit of Paul Klee. We examined what it was to reduce images to the bare bones of the image and understood the importance of developing a strong sense of ‘drawing as seeing’, of observing the world around us.

This exercise in careful observation helps us to develop and deepen our understanding of line and of the importance of line in Keith Haring’s work.

Students then used a magnifying glass and zoomed in to a range of natural objects, observing line, marks and pattern. We used black pen and a range of differing sized papers. The patterns and marks we observed this week will form the basis of the work we will explore next week.

Week 4

This week we examined Keith Haring’s use of colour. We built on our line work through the medium of collage. We created a collage of the plants we drew last week and used our observations of the details, markings and patterns in the seed pods to create patterns on our collage.

Our understandings of Keith Haring’s work and his use of colour, line and patterning is beginning to emerge.

Below are some works by the year 1 and 2 students…
