Dear Parents and Carers,
This week in Year 2 it has been a bit hot, but we are doing great (Evie H) by listening and focusing (Ihsahn)!
We have continued to focus on the idea of Welcome (Alex) because when someone else comes into our community we can do a big welcome for them (Ayshe). There are lots of new people who have come to Year 2 and we want them to feel welcome (Jack K). We have been working on creating a ceremony that represents welcome. To do this we first watched a traditional Maori Welcome Ceremony and a Chinese Welcome Ceremony (Iggy). After viewing these, we decided to use some of the ideas we saw, and then began using these to help us with our own ideas. We have been using costumes, writing speeches and using the iPads to film our rehearsals (Nina).
In maths this week we have been learning about place value. We have played a fun game that helped us learn more about hundreds, tens and ones (Gigi). Using mats that had these headings (H,T,O) on them helped me remember the order of digits (Aimi). We also used MAB blocks and dice. When you roll the dice and get 10 ones you get a 1 ten and put it in the tens column. If you get 10 tens, you get 1 hundred block (Wilco). These games helps us with our maths goals and strategies for adding 2 digit numbers (Aimi).
We did some water science this week to explore how to purify water using filtration (Robert). We were also looking at rocks and writing down where we thought they came from (Ihsahn). There were thoughts and discussions about where the rocks had come from. We found the rocks near the Friendship Tree (Seb CM). We will do research next week to find out more about rocks (geology).
As a Neighbourhood we watched our very first Lego animation that Zoe, Evie M and Ivy Belle had created. The three girls wrote a story in the first week of term about welcoming a new student into our school. Then they made the school out of Lego. They used this set and some Lego characters to record the story with voice overs (Zoe, Evie M). The movie was funny (Tuesday) when the man got stuck on the roof (Sumaye), and when the hair fell off one of the Lego people (Aimi). We were very impressed by the video (Edie) because they put lots of detail in their story and lots of sound effects that made it sound good (Thomas). “I think they were inspired by watching my movie” (Jack K)
Thank you for reading our blog (Camilla), there will be more to come in the future (Zoe).
See ya later alligator (Nina).
