Learning Focus – Week 9!

As we move closer into our final week of the term, students participated in two workshops during the week. Tuesday’s incursion ‘Polyglot Puppetry’ (previous blog post) and the second workshop of ‘Dancing in the Barber Shop’ on Monday involved opera singing with ex-Princes Hill student, Oliver Mann. It was a fantastic experience for students to understand what opera singing was, how it is celebrated in Italy (and worldwide) and the famous dramatic characters involved such as Figaro and the Queen of the night. Oliver’s brilliant story-telling skills allowed the students to listen to how opera is sung in different tones as well as explain his journey of being involved with Melbourne’s opera scene.

We have continued using the Connect, Extend and Challenge approach in line with our literacy focus this week. Our text focus was ‘How Plants Grow.’ After reading the text, students were able to reflect by writing what they already knew from the text (Connect), a fact they discovered/learnt (Extend) and something fascinating about the topic (Challenge). We use this helpful technique with our guided reading sessions as well. In fact, we’ve encouraged students to use the same approach after a book they’ve read at home – you could contribute to the task with them too inside of their reading journals!

The shape houses have just about been completed and they look wonderful! With student led conferences around the corner, students have been busy adding on details to their final pieces of work. The shape task has allowed each child to complete a house in which they are required to illustrate several 2D or 3D shapes, label their features as well as describe their unique house. Students had found this task to be very enjoyable and a big learning curve in line with their shapes knowledge:

Blai: My shape house has 2 bedrooms that are the shape of squares!

Dara: My chimney is the shape of a trapezium and my door is the shape of a rectangle but the door handle is a circle!

Taika: My house is probably the tallest in our home group, but it only has one door, no windows!

Max A: I wanted to challenge myself so I drew my house in 3D! It’s a rectangular prism with lots of square windows!
