This week we had some wonderful guests come in to visit the neighbourhood about their jobs and the stories behind their jobs – linking in with one of our current inquiries of storytelling throughout our community. Geoff Brown and Kholoo from the Arthur Rylah Institute are two experienced scientists who shared not only what they do within their day to day job, but some fascinating stories they’ve experienced. It was a great opportunity for the students to hear stories from a different perspective and/or different working field.
Geoff and Kholoo brought in a brilliant PowerPoint that provided a visual insight into what responsibilities they had, how they care for Australian animals and their habitats, the special tools they use to help the animals and the many, many interesting and funny stories they’ve experienced and learnt through their journey. After the presentation, students completed a reflection sheet which allowed them to identify what they learnt or what they found interesting in the process. It also gave kids the chance to think how Geoff and Kholoo told their stories – in an interesting, detailed approach. Pictures are below.
A mini-project the students are about to begin is our Shape Factory designs! For the past two weeks, students have spent time discovering and finding out about 2D and 3D shapes, their properties and their importance to the world. This week, each student will be required to create a factory, a house, a shop that incorporates the many different 2D and/or 3D shapes and the number of features each creation has. This project will begin this week and continue into next week. Pictures of this progress can be found below as well.
We are also down to our final weeks within our Inquiry Project groups. The students are all very excited to showcase their project creations very soon in the student-led conferencing. From animation films to story writing books and of course, the puppetry theatre stories. We are on the final touches with our story-projects and have been very impressed with what they learnt and story-designs they’ve come up with.
