We back in full swing for the Term and there are some fantastic opportunities for the students approaching! First of all, walkathon today was a brilliant way to bring the school community together and enjoy the occasion. Now that the event is finished, we are encouraging students to look back at their sponsor sheets, mathematically work out how many laps they each completed and finally collect how much sponsorship money they’ve earned. We appreciate any support as this is one of the school’s main funding events!
One of our project groups – ‘Story Writing’ – will be experiencing the first incursion: 100 Story Building. It will be held at school next Monday 13th May. Those parents/carers who have children in this group, the incursion costs are found on compass; payments would be appreciated by the end of this Friday. For the other two project groups in Animations and Puppetry, incursions/excursions are currently being organised later in the term – once these have been organised, we will let you know right away via blog and compass!
A continuation of character development will be an area the students will be working on within their literacy skills. Particularly in line with each of their project groups, students will be looking at each of their characters (within their own stories), the emotions they bring or describe, effects these characters have on their stories and the readers as well as if they represent positive or negative values – superheroes, villains etc. Guided reading groups have begun for the term where some groups have been reshuffled for each of their appropriate reading levels – reading with fluency is the focus within the groups this week.
Another continuation within our maths learning will be addition for this week. Students have been introduced to vertical addition and how sums can be read from top to bottom. By starting with simple addition, students have worked closely on separating place value columns inside of their workbooks. We have also continued to work with materials such as MAB blocks and how 10 units can equal 1 ten. Other students have worked on ‘renaming’ or ‘regrouping’ into the hundreds column and understanding the fact when 10 of one column can equal 1 of the next column.
