Alice Through the Opera Glass – Term 2 Excursion

Breaking news!!! This term the Year 2 Neighbourhood will be visiting the Arts Centre on St Kilda Road to attend an opera performance on Friday 14th June 2019 in Week 8.

As part of our focus on the narrative genre this term, we will attend a relaxed performance of ‘Alice Through the Opera Glass’, a pastiche opera featuring the works of Bizet, Delibes, Handel, Mozart and Verdi. As they peer into the magic looking glass, students will be invited along on a fantastical journey with Alice and the White Rabbit into an alternative opera universe where they will encounter many different characters and learn about the magic of theatre, music, language, and performance.

The excursion complements a focus in the Year 2 Neighbourhood on developing our understanding of the features and structure of narrative texts such as character and setting, and connects to an exciting artist-in-residence program that Hannah has planned for Term 3. It also connects to our inquiry investigating the different reasons why we write, giving students the opportunity to discover different ways our writing can be developed and shared with others.

So, on Friday 14th June 2019, we will leave shortly after eating lunch at 12:00pm so that we arrive to the Arts Centre ready for a 1pm performance start. We will return by the end of the school day.

Look out for permission forms sent through COMPASS, which will be sent to students next week. We plan to catch the tram down Lygon Street into the city, meaning that our transport costs for the excursion will be free, as Public Transport Victoria is now offering free travel for primary school groups during off-peak times. We will also be requiring a number of parent volunteers to travel with us and help out on the day, so please get in touch with Meredith, Kate, or Warrick if you are available and keen to come along!

Parent volunteers will need to have a Working With Children check/card, which can be applied for online and then submitted to Julie at the office for her to keep on record.
