When do people in our community write?

Today as a group we considered the question   ‘When do people in our community write?’

Firstly we brainstormed who the people in our community are:

Who is our community?

Bessie:  Our school

Lewis : Our street

Wesley:  Our town, Carlton, Brunswick

Claudia: Our parents

AJ: Our Teachers

Next we thought it was important to define what a community actually was:

Community definition:

Archie: A whole group of people

Ike: Group of people who get together and do work

Robert: Lots of people doing things together

Molly – All the people around us

Kat – Teamwork

Bessie: Our surroundings

Then we were able to begin creating a table of information about who was in our community, when they wrote and why they were writing.

Who When Why?
My neighbour who moved in recently (Lewis) 2pm everyday.  Or whenever I hit the ball into their yard. They write letters to people they used to live near.  They are usually typing the letters.
My next door neighbours (Wesley) When they are travelling at night time They write letters to people they have met when they are travelling.
Me (AJ) 6.30am Practicing my handwriting so I am ready for school.
Waiter at a café near my house (Meredith) On the weekend He was writing down my order to give it to the kitchen so they knew what to make for me.
Nurse (Kate) At the hospital in Apollo Bay The nurse was writing to record details of Oli’s medical history and to make sure he wasn’t allergic to anything.
My neighbour (Lilian) At their house in their front room My neighbour writes because she is studying.  She is a student at University doing lots of hard work.
My mum (wren) After she has cooked something To help her remember the recipe for next time.
My mum (Olivia) At work every day To record information about the human body to share with other people.
My Dad (Tao) His workplace during the week To communicate with Coles/Woolworths to convince them to use his milk and products.  He has to be persuasive.
My Cousins (Kat) On weekends They write stories to make them happy.
My friends (Robert) Everyday 6pm – 9pm She is doing Chinese homework a day because my aunt and my dad think I will know more things and be more successful.
My Dad (Izzy) At work He is an engineer and he organises the plan to show where everything needs to go.
My Dad (Faisal) At work My Dad writes so he can send information to the office.
My Dad (Karl) At work He needs to write for work because he designs fonts

We would like to invite the parents and carers, who are very important members of our community, to consider coming into visit our neighbourhood to explain to us if you use writing in your life (at work/hobbies) and why you write.  We are always flexible and can work around our timing to suit your availability.  Please come and see Meredith, Kate or Warrick to organise your visit.
