Here’s what’s happening in the neighbourhoods this week!
Debating and justifying
We all love to share our thoughts and ideas and this week we are beginning to investigate and practice debating and justify choices. Can we research and use facts to back up our claims? How do we approach discussions when people have different opinions?
Collections What do I collect? How do I collect? Why do I collect?
Students can view and then create a documentary that explores someone’s collection and looks at how and why they collect? Students will have to think about their interview questions and explore ways to share the narrative of the collection being featured. Documentaries that have been created in a similar vein will be available to the students for viewing.
Collection of arts, photos of collections. Draw, paint, arrange and photograph collections in a way that speaks to beauty. How can we share the collections with others using our understanding of colour, beauty? Artist investigations and – which artists create art with collections and what is their message.
There is also a large number of objects in the contraction space at the moment opening up the possibility and for children to sort and arrange. Does this make them a collection? The group of objects being sorted and categorised through group works, what choices do we make?
Maths investigation
This week we’re exploring how to increase our maths fluency through the maths investigation challenges. Students are working together to solve problems using different materials and then looking at strategies to explain and record their own mathematical thinking.
Writing Station
Our writing stations continue as students dive into their writing with the seeds, what objects tell a story? If the objects around us could feel, smell, move what would they be like in the world? Students are also incorporating their personal writing goals and working with teachers and peers through conferencing to edit and revise their work.
Graphing
Our PHPS census is coming together as students publish the data they have collected. This data all tells a story about who we are and shapes the decisions we make.
Spelling Investigation
Etymology is a fascinating part of our language and this week we’ll continue to explore where words came from through our spelling investigation. Students can share words they love, looking at patterns, root meanings and ever-changing word meanings.
