Year 2 Neighbourhood Week 5 Learning Reflection

Dear Parents and Carers,

These are some of the highlights from Week 5

This week we have been investigating capacity.  First, we began by predicting what capacity means then we measured the capacity of various sized household containers.  One group of students compared the capacity of two bottles. We did this by filling up a bottle with water and then pouring it into another bottle to see which one could hold the most water.  If a bottle could hold more water it means that it has a greater capacity.   Another group decided to compare capacity by filling all of the bottles up with water.  Then we went to the ledge in the Passive Play Area and poured the water into the sandpit.  We counted how many seconds it took for the water to pour out. The milk bottle and orange juice bottles took 169 seconds to empty.

We will continue to investigate the most effective way to measure capacity.

One other way we used used capacity this week was when we were cooking.  Today we had a cooking working workshop with Meredith.  We cooked Banana Muffins in the school kitchen. First we mashed up the bananas to make sure they got very squishy and soft.  While some people were mashing bananas other people were putting the baking soda into a teaspoon and other people were putting milk, flour and sugar into measuring cups.  We also had to put oats, cinnamon, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, ginger and unsalted butter to make the crumble. We had to pour the batter into the muffin patties then we scattered the crumble across the tray.  We the popped them into the oven, which was set to 180 degrees celsius. After recess we ate the muffins. When asked to review the muffins this was some of the feedback we received;

  • They were delicious.  (Maggie)
  • The crumble was crunchy and crumbly.  (Kaan and Tristan)
  • They were fantastic. (Kat)
  • They were brilliant. (Ahilan)
  • They were not for me. (Wesley)
  • It was super yummy. (Ozzy)
  • They tasted amazing.  (Imogen).
  • They tasted super good.  (Alannah)
  • They tasted absolutely awesome.  (Owen L.)
  • They were exquisite.  (Hugo)
