Here are the highlights of this week’s learning focus for the Year 1 Neighbourhood:
English
Over the past few weeks, we have observed many of the students engaging in the animal plays in the Performance Space. This week we will be working on writing scripts and Readers Theatre to assist the children with developing their plays further.
Students will also be working on developing their skills to summarise the key ideas of a text and how to justify their opinions about texts they have read. We are also focusing on developing the characters in our by adding specific vocabulary to explain or describe emotions.
Maths
To assist us in developing our understanding of the order of operations in number sequences and to develop strategies for addition, we will be writing number sentences. Constructing number sentences links mathematics with the real world. We will begin by writing story problems where two or more quantities are combined, and the total has to be found.
We will also be developing our mathematical language by creating personal calendars to assist us to identify personally or culturally specific days and to help us learn how to describe duration using months, weeks, days and hours.
Inquiry
After the excursions, the students will revisit what it means to be a living thing and what living things need. Then as a Neighbourhood, we will combine our joint understandings from the three excursions.
As we start to consider ”What makes us different from other animals?” We will be exploring important dates that we celebrate at school and at home with our families. This will help us to identify what is familiar and what is different in the ways culturally diverse individuals and families live.
