Learning Focus – Week 2 (Term 4)

As the students commenced their final term of the year on a busy note, we wanted to acknowledge they have all done an excellent job and effort towards their assessments last week through PAT and SWST – this will give us a fantastic insight into the learning areas each child will require for a strong finish to 3/4. We have seen some fantastic ‘seeds’ been brought to school in line with their recount writing and identity, but we’d love to see more so we can place these on the displays – Photos, artefacts, sports medals, certificates – anything! And a big congratulations to those students who participated, ran and composed last week’s assembly – it was great to see some new faces in the groups and the way it was presented was unique but strongly reflected the camp from last term!

This week in the neighbourhoods:

Hong Kong Provocation:

As part of the Hong Kong exchange, teachers will be talking to children and setting up a provocation to find out what children know about life in HK. Children will be asked to draw a map of Hong Kong and label this with what they know about Hong Kong. It will also contain a word wall where children are expected to check their spelling using strategies such as dictionaries, Google and trial and error. Mel will be returning this week, therefore to have the new developed knowledge discussed with her will be very interesting.

Maths Investigation – The Human Body:

Children are researching and investigating the mass and volume of body parts whilst solving words problems around this inquiry. They will also be required to illustrate and identity parts of the body and relate it back to predicting certain measurements of size and weight.

Recount Writing:

As the students are thoroughly preparing for a busy term, our inquiry will strongly focus around the concept of identity and each of the students’ identities. Within their writing tasks, students will be required to think of a time in their life that has helped shape who they are today. Experiences, people they’ve met or being influenced by, groups, the environment – anything that has helped contribute to shape their identity. When they choose this recount piece, they will be required to write it in line with their writing goals and it will be published for an end of year share and display!

Identity Art Pieces:

Again, in line with our inquiry focus of identity, students will also be required to create an art piece that strongly reflects their own person – or identity! This week, students will be involved with a series of workshops that enables them to reflect on a list that includes associations that contribute to their identity. Once finished, each student will collate this list and complete a series of illustrated drafts into how they want their identity art piece to look. This can be done by paint, pencil, pastels, crayons, collages, graphic design, clay models, artefact or many more! Similar to the recount writing, these identity art pieces will be on show for share and display later in the year!
