Learning Focus – Week 10 (Term 3)

We have arrived to the final week of this term and what a jam packed term it is has been!

From busy assembly performances to city excursions all the way up to the fun-filled Camp Manyung last week – the students and teachers have thoroughly enjoyed every moment as we turn our heads to another busy Term 4 (11 weeks).

Notes for this week/next term:

Friday 21st September – school will finished at 2:30pm being the last day of the term. Please remember our final assembly will begin at 2:00pm in the Gym Foyer.

Wednesday 19th September – the JSC have organised a ‘dress up in your favourite footy colours’ day. Here, students are invited to wear their favourite team’s guernseys – it can be any football team from AFL, Rugby, Soccer or even American Football! A 1-dollar donation will be collected in the morning by the representatives of the JSC.

Term 4 – as students have begun wearing hats already this term (because of the UV ray levels), we strongly encourage all students to organise themselves during the holiday break and remember to pack their hats ready for day 1. Please remember, hats accepted are to be broad brimmed that covers your face and neck – any sort of caps will not be accepted.

This week in the neighbourhoods:

Hong Kong Provocation:

As part of the Hong Kong exchange, students will be talking to children and setting up a provocation to find out what children know about life in HK. Children will be asked to draw a map of Hong Kong and label this with what they know about Hong Kong. It will also contain a word wall where children are expected to check their spelling using strategies such as dictionaries, Google and trial and error.

Choose your own adventure:

Nova (Arlo’s mum) will be visiting to take kids for a mini lesson on how they can create their own writing adventure. Children are writing their flow charts and then developing a story. How does my identity affect the decisions I make?  Children will explore where decisions are made in stories and how characters make or deal with these decisions. Children will use flowcharts to show how stories have different decisions points and create their own choose your own adventure text. Choose your own adventure texts will be on display in the couch area!

Seed Wall & Soap Box:

We will be encouraging children to bring in items that spark a memory of an event that they have been part of. These will be collected in a wall display in the learning commons. Children will also be encouraged through the week to talk about these to build oral storytelling to support recounts. There will also be a soap box put in the performance space to allow children opportunity to tell stories to an audience.

How do I work like a Mathematician:

As students have been questioning their maths learning and how mathematicians think, students will be involved with a series of different workshops this week that will be surrounding the topics of mathematicians. It will be a great opportunity to understand what a mathematician is, how they work through everyday problems and how it can connect to many of our students’ real lives!

Camp Manyung Recounts:

Students will have the opportunity to look upon the many photographs the parents and teachers had taken during the camp. As students participated in a recounts workshop on camp last week, students can here scan a QR code, choose a photo they’d like to place on their Word Doc (or print if they wish not to type it up) and explain in their recount how the photo relates to their chosen recount event.

Later in the week, students can also have the choice if they would like to place a statement or two about their personal experience of the camp that can then be placed onto the blog.

Last note: there are plenty of lost property in both neighbourhood 1 and 2 – mostly jumpers and hats. If you’re child is missing something, please encourage them to take a look in the two tubs. By the end of this week, we will be washing these clothes and moving them to lost property.
