Our excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance helped us explore how charities, such as the Red Cross, have changed over time and the role they’ve played in Australian history.
We arrived at the Shrine for our 10:00 am tour and were taken back all the way to 1914. We learned about the founder of the Australian Red Cross, Vera Deakin; looked at Red Cross badges, magazines, and supplies from over 100 years ago; and discovered all of the ways that the Red Cross helped Australians in the past.
Our tour guide, Ros, was so impressed with the students’ eagerness to ask thoughtful questions and make connections between the Red Cross back in the day and today.
This week in our project group, we reflected on our day at the Shrine of Remembrance:
“We learned that Vera Deakin founded the Australian Red Cross and we learned about the Red Cross’s history.” – Siena
“The purpose of the Red Cross hasn’t changed throughout history, they have basically done the same thing (helping others) from day 1 to 2018.” – Griffin
Next week, we will continue to work on our PSA showing our learning from the past few weeks.
Here are some snapshots from the day:
