Global Goal Investigations

Over the last few weeks, the year 2 neighbourhood have been working hard investigating their chosen globals goals, with the idea in mind of how we can make positive changes.  We have been going deeper with specific aspects of the goals – in particular ones that may be closely linked with us.

The Quality of Life Group focussed last week on the Zero Hunger goal, analysing our own practice when it comes to how we interact with food in our house and what steps we take to make zero food waste. Jen and the group collated their thoughts into a questionnaire that they have asked the whole neighbourhood to take home and fill in.  The questions are hoping to ascertain how families plan for minimal food wastage in their homes, which will hopefully have a knock on effect when looking at global hunger as an important issue.   Below are the questions that students brainstormed and wrote together:

  1. Do you know what it means by zero food waste? Explain your understanding.
  2. Do you know how much waste you make a day/week? Where does this waste go?
  3. Do you eat leftovers? What leftovers did you eat this week?
  4. Do you look in the fridge/cupboard before you go shopping? What’s the most common thing in your cupboard that you accidently buy?
  5. Do you make a list before you go shopping? What’s on your list this week?
  6. Do you use a weekly meal planner? Can we see a copy!?

The Quality of Life Group look forward to hearing back from our community!

The Sustainability Group have been focussing their attention on what it means to be sustainable and what we do as individuals and as a community to support the global goals that encourage sustainability. Meredith and the group also worked to develop a set a questions to find out what the Princes Hill Primary community, they have managed to interview a few 5/6 students and get their thoughts on their investigation.

  1. What does it mean to you to be sustainable?
  2. What kinds of things do you do at home or when you go out to be more sustainable?
  3. Do you think that sustainability is important? Why?
  4. Where can you learn about sustainability?
  5. What makes Melbourne a sustainable city?

The Life on Earth Group have been delving into ecosystems and the importance of protecting our ecosystems. Warrick has been guiding the group, helping them strengthen their understanding of why nature is a delicate balance and we need to be mindful of what we do on a daily basis to keep this harmonious balance.  Click on the picture below to watch some videos that will help you understand how an ecosystem works.
