Learning Focus – Week 6 (Term 3)

Hi all!

Couple of quick reminders:

  • This week is BOOK WEEK! And on Wednesday 22nd August, the school is having their annual book week parade. We have been doing a lot of shared reading in the neighbourhood, inspiring the students to think of a particularly book character they could possibly dress up for the day. So get those ideas down and get dressed up! The parade will be held in the gym and begin just after 9:00am! Don’t miss out!
  • Beginning this Friday 24th August, will be a series of 3/4 excursion the students will be participating in (each student will participate in one excursion over the course of a week or two). See earlier post for details. If you haven’t handed back your forms (blue coloured), please do so as soon as possible!!!

Camp Update:

  • Tomorrow, all 3/4 students who will be going to this year’s Camp Manyung will be receiving a dietary requirement form along with a list of what the students can bring/pack to camp. As the camp need to know of any specific dietary requirements, ALL STUDENTS need to have these forms back at least 10 days before the camp so the chefs can fully prepare the delicious meals!
  • Medical Info – if your child has a medical condition and requires to bring a kit of any sort on camp, the teachers will need to have an ACTION PLAN before we leave. This includes anaphylaxis, asthmas, cold/flu syrup or anything similar. If you also plan to bring medicine for your child, it will be encouraged to include the instructions of dosages.
  • Camp payments are also to be paid by THIS FRIDAY 24th AUGUST! We are just about there, but still waiting on a small handful.

As we get back on track from a busy Week 5 which included Athletics Day and Healthy Eating and Play day, the students focus on our inquiry will be on identity and how the project groups we are currently researching has influenced us to be the person we are today. We all have unique qualities, beliefs, personality, looks and/or expressions that make our personal identity, but how have these groups influenced us to make the choices we do today.

Time & Seasons on Planets!

One area of mathematical learning for the students this week will be the chance to investigate how time is measured on our solar system’s planets, the seasons it experiences and their ‘earth age’ according to the orbit of the sun. Students will investigate how many hours are in a day, how many days are in a year, how old they will be as well as what kinds of seasons each planet has and scientifically how these seasons have come to be on that planet.

Spelling Investigation – Time!

Continuing on from our mini maths unit on time, students will be writing up a list of time-based words within their English books as well as writing a sentence to support their understanding of the word.

Characters in Flow Charts!

In this workshop, students will think about the different decisions that a character may need to make in a story and how their decisions, which are influenced by their identity, can change the course of a story. Students will draw connections between personal experiences and the world of texts, and share responses with others as well as recognizing key events in a text, highlighting issues in making moral decisions.

Code of Conduct for Camp Manyung!

This week, students will continue their conversations about preparing themselves for the camp. In their home groups, they will be required to write up their own code of conduct that they believe is important to include on our camp. They will also be required to write up their own ‘mission statement’ of how they want to emotionally feel when experiencing the camp, for example “To be brave, not miss my family, be adventurous but mainly have a good time with my friends.”
