In Week 6 the Year 2 Neighbourhood is going on an another excursion – this time to the NGV at Federation Square! On Tuesday 22nd May, we will all catch the tram from Lygon Street into the city to visit our state gallery for the day. As part of Education Week, the NGV is offering free entry into ‘Colony: Australia 1770-1861’, including an introductory talk, and we will also visit ‘Colony: Frontier Wars’, a parallel exhibition that offers an indigenous perspective of the changes that occur during this time.
This excursion is an opportunity for students to explore indigenous artwork that emerged in response to the period of colonisation in Australia’s history, as well as look maps, drawings, paintings, furniture, photography, and everyday objects in the exhibition as a way to develop our understanding of how things have changed over time.
Look out for permission forms, which will be sent home with students next week. This excursion is free of cost, as Public Transport Victoria is now offering free travel for primary school groups during off-peak times. We will also be requiring a number of parent volunteers to travel with us and help out on the day, so please get in touch with Meredith, Jen, or Warrick if you are available and keen to come along!
