On Tuesday we had another successful round of loom making. A huge thank you to Joanna our construction foreman, Darren, Regi and Jackie for helping out for the session.
Throughout the process the students are encouraged to think mathematically. Initially each piece of wood needs to be measured and cut into half – ½ of 60cm for the first piece, then half of 28cm for the second. Trying to work with bigger numbers can be a challenge, so partitioning the numbers for the students helps – e.g. 28 is 20 and 8, half of 20 (even half of 2, then 20), half of 8, then put your two numbers together. Once the frame has been constructed, Students need to mark where the nails will go, that requires using a ruler and making approx 20, 1cm marks long the short edge. Making sure the same number goes on one side as it does the other.
So far we have 29 frames completed! Only another 31 to go. Thanks to those of you who have generously volunteered to help on Friday – I think we can make a large dent in those numbers! If you are able to bring along any tools with you – hammers and screwdrivers – extra tools means more kids can be got through!
Next week, we will have our ‘Artist in Residence’ Hannah come and facilitate a workshop on weaving techniques, so the students can start making their tapestry masterpieces!
Enjoy some great photos below of our handy year 2 students…….
