Yesterday we embarked on our biggest project yet – Loom Making! Our Inquiry has led us to develop understandings about how people would acquire things in the past – and we came to the understanding that if you wanted something (and you weren’t super rich), you had to make it for yourself!
The students have taken themselves back to a time where measureing, sawing, screwing, hammering and nailing were skills you needed to have to create. Students used a tape measure to work out where they needed to cut the wood and where to hammer the nails. We also discussed the difference between using a screwdriver as opposed to an electric drill – the electric drill was firmly favoured and we agreed thank goodness it was invented!
Over this week and next, all of the students will get an opportunity to participate in the loom making workshop and create their own weaving loom, which they will then use to weave their own tapestries.
An especially big thanks to Joanna for jumping in and becoming our construction ‘foreman’ and to the wonderful parents who gave up their time to help – Rachel, Gabrielle, Lizzie and Caroline.
We are looking for more helpers today (Tuesday), Friday and then again next week!
Enjoy some of the great moments from yesterday!
