As part of our explorations of ‘planet school’ the prep children and teachers have been out and about closely examining the many different buildings and spaces that make up our school environment. We wanted to find a way to document what we saw and decided that drawing would be a great place to start.
Each group ventured out into the yard equipped with special drawing pens and clip boards and together we decided on a section of the school to draw. Once settled we first closed our eyes and listened to the sounds around us. We then made careful observations and talked about the features we could see for example the shapes of the building and the number of windows and doors. The children then got to work drawing!
This was a valuable experience as it enabled the children to slow down and to examine the world around them. It provided the opportunity for each child to draw individually, though in dialogue with others, and to see that although our subject matter may be the same our interpretations and representations will vary.
