Inquiry/Game Creations Discussion & Reflections Week 6

During the last couple of weeks, the 3/4 neighbourhood’s have been focusing on the concept of communication – particularly through our Game Creations and how instructions, objectives or conversations within playing our games can contribute towards making the game work.

This week, our guiding question was: How do language choices and design contribute to effective communication?

Students from Neighbourhood 1 had a great conversation on Friday about how these choices contribute towards their games, here are some examples:

Sophie – Sometimes if your words are nice, you will be sensible. If not it affects your choices.
Poppy – If you use bad language, it will impact on your future you could get in trouble.
Nina – If you use bad language people might not want to listen to you.
Sophie – The words that you say can show what you feel.
Milly – If you want to persuade someone you have to use strong, understandable language.
Itsara – A bad choice of words could make the reader bored and not interested.
Otto – In our game, we have to make our language communicable. We have to choose game language and use short sentences.
Nina – If you are talking to someone, the tone you use can affect the meaning of what you say.
Esther – We need specific language so they know how to play your game.
Eve – so they understand your game.
Jemima – You need to be more specific than “the token”, we need to say “the red token”.
Matteo – Players could get confused.
Rasmus – someone could choose the wrong token.
Etienne – A lot of people say think about your words before you say it, and if it’s not nice don’t say anything. I think that we should think:
“Is true, is it kind and is it necessary?”
Nina – They will try to keep reading it over trying to make it make sense.

The students’ game creations are half way through their drafts and are coming along very well. Next Wednesday, they will have an opportunity to test and experience others games by swapping neighbourhoods. We have also invited the 5/6’s to come along to help provide feedback on what could be improved/kept in order for the games to work effectively.

Remember! The 3/4 Neighbourhoods will be inviting family and friends to the end of term games expo during week 10! Keep an eye out for the date and times!

See you at the Bazaar!
