This afternoon we were very disappointed to discover uneaten sandwiches thrown in the neighbourhood one bin again. We see this as a problem for the following three reasons.
Firstly, food in the rubbish bin goes into landfill, which creates unnecessary methane pollution. Genuine food waste should go into the compost bins that we have at the school.
Secondly, this is a true is a waste of money for families. Money wasted on food could have been used more purposefully, for example it could be donated to services that support Melbourne’s homeless population.
Finally, someone at home packed these lunches with care and consideration, hoping to provide essential nutrition and energy for a full day of learning. When lunches end up in the bin, we know that students have not had what they need to be at their best in their learning. It also wastes the time and efforts of the person who has taken the time to pack these lunches.
I am sure all families will agree that this is completely unacceptable. We encourage you to have a conversation with your children about lunches and identify if their are any items that they really don’t enjoy and are possibly throwing away. We hope you can identify some healthy substitutes so that we can avoid this problem in the future!
Kind Regards,
The 3/4 Teachers.
