Week 4 Learning Focus & FYI

Timetable change

We have had to change the timetable a little this week. We needed our Library time to be scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) instead of Wednesday. Please ensure to support the children in remembering their reading satchels for tomorrow!

Thanks!

Coach Approach notes

Last week all the children brought home a blue notice for Coach Approach, which is a part of the whole school transition program. Please ensure that it comes back to school with your child.

Book Talk

Thank you for your patience last week, Book Talk will recommence this week.

LEARNING FOCUS FOR WEEK 4

Literacy Learning

Writing

This week the children will continue our investigation into persuasive texts with a focus on developing ideas and language that supports the understanding of persuasive texts.

Reading

This week during the reading workshops the children will be investigating fiction and non-fiction text features and how to identify each genre. They are also developing a word wall for the different types of language that we find around these genres. The children have already collaboratively shared their ideas for different words and identified which words fit with fiction, which ones fit with non-fiction and which words are relevant to both. There are some fantastic graphic representations showing this learning pictured.

Numeracy Learning

This week the children are finishing their data collection work. Each child was asked to develop a question to ask, gather information from a sample size group, create a tally of this information and represent the collected data in a graph from which findings can be analysed.  This work, once complete, can be found in your child’s port folio.

Following this data collection work the numeracy focus will be on measurement. The children will be investigating the different ways we measure time and how to choose the appropriate unit of measurement depending on the context.

Inquiry Learning

“My Place in the World: What Shapes us and Connects Us”

Change: Why do things change and how do we measure it?

We have been using three concepts to explore change this term; Healthy Eating (How do we grow?), Plants (How do things grow?) and Time (How can we measure change?)

Healthy Eating

Now the children are exploring food as fuel and how our bodies turn food into energy. The focus is on the digestive system.

Plants

The children have explored how plants use water to grow. The focus is now on the sun and what role it plays to help a plant growing.

Time

The children are investigating how time is measured and which units of measurement is best for different events. The children are also exploring how time is linked to the earths rotation and orbit around the sun.
