Students in the year 2 neighbourhood have been exploring the concept of migration. Students visited the immigration museum last term as way to explore the reasons why people leave their place of origin and the difficulties and struggles this involves. For some people this is voluntary decision and for others it involves little or no choice.
In the last week of term 3 we read a book, written by Anh Do, about his escape from war torn Vietnam and his arrival in Australia. The book, The Little Refugee detailed his experiences on the boat coming over to Australia and things he had to deal with when coming in to a new country. One page really stood out for the students:
A discussion was started about what difficulties people may have when they first arrive in Australia – from language, to food, clothing and being able to participate in day to day life. The students came up with a list of things that kids who arrive in Melbourne may like to know about:
The students agreed that possibly a simple booklet that outlined various things that New Australians might need to know would be helpful. The students then worked in small groups to brainstorm what they would like to include in their booklet, drafted their work and then completed a good copy that is now displayed in the neighbourhood. Below are the books that students have created (apologies some of the pages are mixed landscape and portrait!)
